The Taro Okamoto Museum of Art mainly collects and preserves the works of Taro Okamoto, and his parents Kanoko and Ippei.
Exhibitions will be held to encourage the questioning of accepted ideas and create new possibilities in art.
Also lectures and workshops will be held on related fields.
The museum will also support the creative activities of the citizens in the hope of contributing to and enhancing the richness in their lifestyles and the development of their cultural background.

February 1989 "The World of Kanoko Okamoto – in memory of her birth a century ago"exhibition held at the Kawasaki City Museum.
April 1990 ‘Ippei Okamoto and his apprentices’ held at the Kawasaki City Museum.
April 1991 ‘Taro Okamoto – Outstanding Talent from Kawasaki’ exhibition held at the Kawasaki City Museum.
November 1991 352 principle works of Taro Okamoto donated to Kawasaki City.
December 1991 Construction of the museum decided upon.
June 1992 Organization and planning committee for the building of the Taro Okamoto Museum of Art established.
January 1993 Taro Okamoto awarded tha title ‘Honorable Citizen of the City of Kawasaki’.
March 1993 Basic concept for the Taro Okamoto Museum of Art decided upon.
An additional 1427 principle works of Taro Okamoto donated to kawasaki City.
April 1993 Detailed – planning committee for construction of the Taro Okamoto Museum of Art established.
‘Taro – a kaleidoscope’ exhibition held at the Kawasaki City Museum.
July 1993 Basic plan for construction of the Taro Okamoto Museum of Art decided upon.
Ikuta Green Belt decided upon as the proposed building site.
Construction committee for the Taro Okamoto Museum of Art established.
March 1995 Basic construction plan, basic exhibition working plan and the working plan for the symbol tower completed.
December 1995 Committee for collecting and evaluating works for the Taro Okamoto Museum of Art established.
January 1996 Taro Okamoto dies at the age of eighty – four.
March 1996 Construction working plan for the symbol tower completed.

November 1996 Work begins on the construction of the museum.
March 1997 Guidance and research council for the Taro Okamoto Museum of Art established.
September 1997 97 TARO’ exhibition held at 21Sin – Yurigaoka.
November 1997 ‘Work begins on the gallery and the symbol tower. "Tower of the Mother".
February 1999 Construction of the building and the interior completed.
April 1999 Inauguration of the Taro Okamoto Museum of Art announced.
The Kawasaki Museum Promotion Foundation is entrusted with its administration.
Construction work for the symbol tower is completed.
July 1999 All construction work for the museum completed.
